Moving Native Americans
- Native Americans expanded westward by the 1830's.
- Large numbers of them lived in the eastern part of
the country.
- The five civilized tribes lived in Gerogia, Alabama,
Mississippi, and Florida.
- The five civilized tribes are the Cherokee, Creek,
Seminole, Chickasaw, and Chocetaw.
- The tribes etablished forming societies with
successful economies.
- Since Missisippi was dry few White Americans lived there.
- Settlers wanted the government to relocate Native
Americans that were living in the southeast.
- Presidet Andrew Jackson, a man of the frontier
himself, supported the settlers kemand for Native American land.
Indian Removal Act
- Congress passed the Indian removal act in 1830.
- The actpayed Native americans to move west.
- In 1834 Congress created the Indian Territory, an area
in preasent day Oklahoma, for Native americans from the southeast.
